Description of Learning Theory
Constructivist learning theory focuses on creating meaning and learning from experiences, and that due to an individual’s variety of previous understanding and knowledge each learner may interpret things differently. Constructivists uses these differences as a framework to encourage dynamic learning that forms and changes as the learner interacts with and explores new concepts.
Learning Theory Rationale
While as educators we can give each student learning tools to further their knowledge, it is their experience and exploration of the lessons that are instrumental to their learning. Students are able to choose to work their own previous knowledge and skills into the unit. A student familiar with basketball for example, may choose to work basketball into their choreographed dance and create a unique understanding of the content.

A project-based learning design allows for all these benefits, as well as a greater ability for students to adjust and explore the content depending on their interests, previous experience and learning needs.
